How it all started
For me, the desire to eliminate plastic in my life started a number of years ago when I saw a documentary about a researcher who found cancer cells growing in a petri dish where they shouldn't have been. It turned out there was something in the plastic petri dish that had caused this growth - endocrine disruptors. I can't find anything about it any more. Maybe I dreamed it.
In any case, there have been more reports about the unexpected consequences of plastic from the pollution to the effects on our health. In 1996 'Our Stolen Future' was written about endocrine disruptors and their affects. (Even if it's a bit old, I still recommend reading it). In 2009, The Endocrine Society issued a statement about how endocrine disruptors are affecting health. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19502515
In 2011, another researcher who helped write 'Our Stolen Future', John Peterson Myers did an update talk on the information given in this book.
Here is a Ted Talk given in 2012 by researcher Theo Colborn who also contributed to 'Our Stolen Future' about a letter she wrote to the president. She founded the TEDX - The Endocrine Disruptor Exchange which unfortunately will close down in November this year due to lack of funding. A real shame. https://endocrinedisruption.org/ Ms Colborn has passed away.
In addition to EDCs in plastic, there is the problem of pollution.
As early as 2006 in his documentary 'The Inconvenient Truth', Al Gore recommended that we reduce our use of plastic bags. Everyone is talking about plastic pollution these days.
So in my blog, I'll talk about how we slowly moved away from most plastic and how we are trying to avoid EDCs.
